I realize my week 8 review is late and there is no week 9 and I apologize but I have been a very busy girl and there has also been a slight lack in the release of good movies lately. Besides Epic (which I heard was not so epic) Monster’s University and Despicable Me 2 are the only cartoons of the summer so far and both are follow ups to fantastic movies
I eagerly awaited the release of Monster’s University as I’m sure a lot of people did. Monster’s Inc is one of my favorite cartoons and certainly one of my top Pixar flicks. I really liked that they went the route of doing a prequel instead of the normal go-to of a sequel but somehow the movie just didn’t live up to my expectations. Yeah it had some funny moments but it just wasn’t enough in my opinion. Some of the new characters they added were funny, like the purple fuzzy guy that’s just a set a legs and I did enjoy seeing “cameos” of the older characters from the first one. But like I said, it just wasn’t enough. I’m not sure if I just had my bar set too high or what but I believe they could have done better especially after making everyone wait 10 years.
Now let me rewind and tell you a little about the short that came before Monster’s University. I always love the little Pixar shorts and this one definitely didn’t disappoint. The art, detail, and lighting were stunning and so life-like. Even if you decide you don’t care to watch Monster’s University I highly recommend you check out this short.
Like most cartoons and kid’s movies I enjoyed the first Despicable Me. I’m not usually a huge fan of sequels and I’m really starting to believe that we are incapable of writing original material and for some reason if something sells well that means we are supposed to continue it until the franchise bleeds dry. However, this sequel was good, funny, and entertaining. Much more so than Monster’s. It got a bit raunchy and adultish at times but I really have no idea what kids understand and pick up these days. The little minions and Steve Carell’s accent are what really made the movie hilarious.
So at one point in time I was trying to see World War Z so I could add that review but after a few failed attempts I have still yet to see it and I’m not sure if I will get the chance to. I have heard a few mixed reviews but if you think I should see it then let me know.
RATINGS:
Monster’s University – 3 out of 5 (being generous)
Despicable Me 2 – 4 out of 5
