SUMMER MOVIE SERIES – Week 5 – Now You See Me

This past Friday I chose to go see new opening movie Now You See Me. Despite the fact Fast 6 is still the number one movie at the box office, I went to see this movie after being intrigued by the two and half minute long trailer, which surprisingly tells you almost nothing other than 4 magicians rob a bank. Honestly though, most trailers are getting a bit long nowadays and some give away too much to the point that I don’t even want to see it. On a good trailer note I finally saw the one for Catching Fire and I couldn’t be any more excited.

Speaking of excited, I really wanted to see this movie so I joined up with my parents to watch it since no one else was interested in going. With all the excitement going in, I didn’t leave all that satisfied.

Don’t get me wrong the movie was pretty good and definitely worth a watch if you’re into that sort of thing. If you’re smart and pick up on clues then you’ll be thinking and figuring out the movie easily as they go along. At times it was a little predictable and some of the clues were blatantly obvious but the twist at the end and the revealing of the fifth horseman was definitely surprising.

It starts off with a magic trick (pretty much the only one in the movie other than the horsemen stunts) that makes someone choose a card but if you’re following along in the audience you can choose one as well. I was really surprised when the card I chose was right but then again it is magic. You spend half of the movie following the horsemen and their shows, and the other half following the cops who seem to stay one step behind them every time. You spend the whole time wondering who is this extra person (the fifth horseman) arranging everything and only about 10 minutes trying to figure out how they pulled off the elaborate trick before Morgan Freeman’s character comes in and spoils it all.

I’m not really sure why this movie didn’t live up to the expectations in my mind. Maybe I set the bar too high. Either way I say if the movie trailer intrigued you too the by all means see it and judge for yourself but if you can wait, I’m sure it will be on instant Netflix in a year.

MY RATING: 3.8 out of 5
